Riding The Wave

October 7, 2007

Riding The WaveBy far the most important trend in online business is the shift from monetizing knowledge (information) to monetizing attention (eye balls and clicks). Google.com is a great example of this, so is MySpace.com, and the new comer Zecco.com. These businesses do not sell products, services, subscriptions, or information. They simply provide free services and attract lots of attention. Once these companies have people’s attention, they immediately begin selling pieces of it to the highest bidder.

All these companies transacting in attention are simply powering their ventures with advertising revenue. Advertisers pay top dollar for the right positioning in front of the right set of eye balls. Therefore companies that are able to attract lots of attention in a specific sought after segment can make a hefty profit.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has a market capitalization of 185.42B* a larger cap than Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) at a cap of $177.20B*. Just imagine that; a company less than 4 years old selling advertising is worth almost 8 times more** than one of the world’s largest pharmaceuticals. There is more money in advertising to people than in curing them.

In this new era of online business, whoever can conceive of new and original ways in attracting lots of attention can build a very successful e-Business.

Do you have what it takes to build a surfboard and ride this wave? I sure am trying!
